Numark iDJ Live: DJ On The Go
The standard set-up for a DJ is becoming smaller and smaller with each passing year, and Numark are keeping up with the trend.

ViewWhereas once upon a time the mobile DJ used to have to carry around two decks, a mixer and boxes upon boxes of vinyl, things have shrunk considerably - whether from vinyl to CD by using a deck like the Numark NDX900, or to laptop and controller with something like the Numark NS6. By keeping all of your tracks on a laptop and using the built-in mixer of something like the NS6, a lot of space was saved in a DJ setup.
Recently, however, Numark have found a way to make the setup even smaller using technology that's slowly but surely working its way into the home of almost every consumer - specifically, Apple iOS devices such as the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. Numark know that people will carry around their entire record collection on one of these devices, and got to work making it work for the mobile DJ with the Numark iDJ Live Controller.
Numark have teamed up with software developers Algoriddim, producers of the hugely popular DJay app, to bring support for their iDJ Live controller to the DJay for iPad app. The app offers the functionality to mix live on the fly, record your whole mix and even enable a sneaky automix mode to make DJay mix your playlist automatically. Look ma, no hands!
So how well does it work? Well, the iDJ Live is an ultra-compact, incredibly lightweight unit. That means that the build quality is not a million miles away from the Numark Mixtrack, itself a hugely popular DJ controller. The thing is, because it's so portable and so light, you can seriously mix anywhere - and not just music, either.
VJs are becoming more and more popular - people who mix video and music into an incredible multimedia extravaganza. Well, guess what? The iDJ Live can do that, too, with Algoriddim's VJay app. You can even use the built-in camera on the iPad to create live videos on the fly. How cool is that?
The iDJ is incredibly responsive, and it'll get you mixing on your iOS device in no time. It works best with iPad, although it does support the smaller devices too. The app has full integration with iTunes, so you'll never have to spend precious minutes hunting for a track, and it even comes complete with an iPad stand to help you get the party going.
What do I think of it? If you're looking for a super-portable and super-affordable DJ setup and you've got an iOS device, the iDJ Live is pretty much the perfect thing for you. If you're after something a little less lightweight but a bit more professional, consider the Numark iDJ Pro - a killer bit of kit I'll look at in another blog.
