  • Gibson SG 70s Tribute: The Sound Of The 70s

We here at Music Junkie love the new Gibson 70s Tribute range of Electric guitars. We put an SG Special 70s Tribute in Dan's hands and got him to write down his review...

For Gibson, the 1970s was truly the decade of the SG. Following its introduction in the 60s, the popularity of the SG snowballed in the 70s thanks to artists such as Angus Young of AC/DC, Frank Zappa, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and Elliot Easton of The Cars.

Gibson's new 70s Tribute range of guitars also features a Les Paul and a Firebird, but it's arguably the SG that steals the show because of its connections to the era. Available in four satin finishes - Vintage Sunburst, Silverburst, Cherry and Ebony - these guitars feature mini humbucker pickups, SG Rounded neck profile and 17 degree headstock angle with volute. But what are they like?

We've got a couple of these guitars here at Music Junkie now, and I have to say they really are amazing. When you pick it up, the first thing you notice is that the satin finish feels great under your hands and makes it very easy to move around on the neck. This is especially important with an SG, because they were introduced as a guitar that was fast and comfortable to play!

With that in mind, how does it feel? Well, the neck profile is a tad bit different to the average SG, which uses a 60s SlimTaper neck. This profile is designed specifically for the SG and, if you ask me, it's absolutely perfect. The neck feels comfortable in my hand without being too small to get a good grip on. The trademark thin body of the SG remains, making it lightweight and comfortable.

Now, let me say this above all - this guitar sounds absolutely incredible. The 70s Tribute range of guitars all feature Gibson Mini Humbuckers, which are high-quality, high-output, high-efficiency pickups which offer a great tone. These are hot and clear pickups, perfect for modern rock, classic rock, any rock! It's especially easy to get that great AC/DC sound on them, although I will buy a coke for the first person I hear playing Black Napkins in store.

Gibson have outdone themselves time after time with the decade tributes, and the 70s guitars are no exception - come on down to our flagship music store in Leicester and check them out for yourself. Even better, come along to our 70s themed Gibson day to celebrate the launch of these amazing guitars with us!
